Eleftherios Venizelos (1864-1936)

Eleftherios Venizelos {Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος} (1864-1936) [Georgios I] [Konstandinos I] [€0.50c] [Omonias Square] [Transportation] [The Tower Of Rizoupolis]. Greek statesman, born in Crete {Kriti ~ Κρήτη}. One of Greece's most prominent political figures. He was a pioneer in social reform, a renowned diplomat and played a key role in modernising the Greek State and liberated Northern Greece and the Aegean Islands.

After studying at the University of Athens The link opens in a new window., he returned to Crete and played a prominent part in the Cretan insurrection of 1896-1897. In 1905 he led the Cretan assembly to declare the union of Crete with Greece; this union actually was not completed until 1913 [Flags].

In 1909 he was called to Athens [Place Names] by the members of the so-called Military League, who wanted political reform, and immediately won an extraordinary popular following. During his first term as Greek premier (1910-1915), Venizelos completed the revision of the constitution (1911) [Klafthmonos Square], undertook military and financial reform, and led Greece through the Balkan Wars (1912-1913), in which its territory and population were approximately doubled.
