Emaciated Greek Children During The Occupation (1941-1942). After the total overthrow of Greece by Axis forces, Macedonia {Μακεδονία} [Place Names] and Thrace {Thraki ~ Θράκη} were occupied by the Bulgarians and the rest of Greece by Germans and Italians.

From the outset the vanquishing forces treated the Greek people with untold cruelty. Through starvation, arrests, torture, hangings and mass executions they tried to reduce the Greek population to a state of wretchedness, to destroy their spirit and bring about their total submission.

They seized food and brought upon the country an unprecedented famine which reached its height in the harsh winter of 1941-1942. The area of Athens [Place Names] and Piraeus {Pireefs ~ Πειραιεύς} suffered particular hardship. Meanwhile, the currency was rapidly losing value and inflation followed.

So, many thousands of people succumbed to deprivation and disease, and the dead were buried by the dozen in communal graves.
