Greek War Of Independence (1821-1829)

Mando Mavrogenous (1796-1840)

Back to where you came from. The same text in Greek.

Mando Mavrogenous {Μαντώ Μαυρογένους} (1796-1840) [2 Drachmas]. Mando Mavrogenous came from a family that had held high offices in Vlachia and subsequently acquired large estates in Vienna and Trieste.

As soon as the War of Independence was declared, she came from Trieste to Mikonos {Μύκονος} with her father. She used her own money to fit out two ships and harried pirates. Then she equipped an army corps and started taking part in the Cause. She took part in a number of battles and sent letters to women's philhellenic [Philhellenes] circles so as to gain sympathy for Greece and boost the philhellenic tide.

She spent her entire fortune on the Cause and when the War of Independence was over, Kapodistrias [People] bestowed on her the honorary title of Lieutenant-General and gave her a home in Nafplion {Ναύπλιον} in recognition of her contribution.

Because of her relationship with Ipsilandis {Υψηλάντης}, Koletis {Κωλέτης} expelled her to Paros {Πάρος}, where she died in poverty, a guest in the home of relatives.
