Greek War Of Independence (1821-1829)

Laskarina Bouboulina (1776-1825)

Back to where you came from. The same text in Greek.

Laskarina Boubouli (Bouboulina) {Λασκαρίνα Μπούμπουλη (Μπουμπουλίνα)} (1776-1825) [1 Drachma] [Lela Karagianni]. Married first to Dimitrios Giannouzas {Δημήτριος Γιάννουζας} in 1788, her second marriage was to Dimitrios Bouboulis {Δημήτριος Μπούμπουλης}, a ship owner from Spetses {Σπέτσες}, in 1801.

After his death in 1811 Bouboulina increased his estate and had the "Agamemnon" {Αγαμέμνων} built. It was a ship with 18 cannons. She placed this ship, three smaller ones and a large sum of money at the disposal of the Greek Cause. She spent her riches on food and munitions for those fighting for the Cause and thought nothing of it.

She played an active part in many operations such as the siege of Nafplion {Ναύπλιον}, and was among the first to enter Tripolis (Tripolitsa)  {Τρίπολις} ({Τριπολιτσά}). In Tripolis she rescued the women in Hursit Paşa's harem and sent them to Patras {Patre ~ Πάτραι}. During the civil wars [Civil Wars] she sided with the military and Kolokotronis [People].

She was murdered in her home on Spetses during a family dispute.
