Greek War Of Independence (1821-1829)

Athanasios Tsakalof (1788-1851)

Back to where you came from. The same text in Greek.

Athanasios Tekelis (Tsakalof) {Αθανάσιος Τεκελής (Τσακάλωφ)} (1788-1851) [Aleksandros Mavrokordatos]. Born in Epirus {Ipiros ~ Ήπειρος}, he was obliged to seek refuge in Russia before finishing his studies. From there he went to Paris after having changed his name to Tsakalof.

In 1813 Tsakalof went back to Russia and met Nikolaos Skoufas [People] and Emmanouil Ksanthos [People] in Odessa. Together they founded the Society Of Friends [The Society] in 1814. When Aleksandros Ipsilandis [People] took over leadership of the society in 1821, Tsakalof immediately went to Moldova-Walachia to take part in the War of Independence and accompanied Dimitrios Ipsilandis [People] to Greece as his Adjutant.

In spite of making an important contribution to preparations for the War of Independence, Tsakalof never became involved in politics, neither did he undertake administrative, or other posts. After the arrival of Kapodistrias [People], Tsakalof was employed in the General Commission and was plenipotentiary for Epirus at the IV National Assembly in Argos {Άργος} (1829).

After Kapodistrias' assassination, Tsakalof settled in Moscow where he died without becoming involved in public affairs.
