Metaksourgio

Back to where you came from. The same text in Greek.

Metaksourgio {Μεταξουργείο} (the Greek word for silk mill) was the neighbourhood of the master builders of Athens. It was named thus in 1835, after an old silk mill, which was housed in Millerou {Μυλλέρου} street, in the unfinished domicile of Prince Katakouzinos {Κατακουζηνός}. This silk mill belonged to the English company "Augustus Brume and Co" whose ownership was later transferred to the "Greek Silk Company" {Elliniki Siriki Eteria ~ Ελληνική Σηρική Εταιρεία} of K. & D. Douroutis {Δουρούτης} Bros. During the reign of King Otto {Othon ~ Όθων} [People] the district was called "New Sphere" {Nea Sfera ~ Νέα Σφαίρα}. The elders knew it as the neighbourhood of the "Knights of the silent revenge", because in the coffee shop of Vouksinos {Βουξίνος}, the locals used to "convene" in secrecy and make plans of humiliation for whomsoever dared offend a girl of the neighbourhood, or show bravado.
