Ambelokipi

"Elpis" Hospital

"Elpis" ({Ελπίς} = hope} Hospital is located behind the blocks of flats that were built along Aleksandras {Αλεξάνδρας} avenue for the refugees of 1922 and was built in segments, between 1904 and 1912.

Its unique neo-classical buildings were founded on June 28th, 1904, in the presence of King Georgios I {Γεώργιος Α'} [People], during the mayorship of Spiridon Merkouris {Σπυρίδων Μερκούρης}.

In 1912 it was used by the Greek Red Cross for the wounded soldiers of the Balkan Wars and in 1922 [Contents] it was used as a Military Hospital.

In 1971, during the mayorship of Dimitrios Ritsos {Δημήτριος Ρίτσος}, its administration was passed to the Municipality of Athens [Place Names].
