Ambelokipi

Averof State Penitentiary

Back to where you came from. The same text in Greek.

The construction of the building started under the initiative of Queen Olga {Όλγα}, of Greece, in 1894 and lasted two years. It was built in order to protect the juvenile delinquents who, until then, were imprisoned along with all sorts of fellons, in the same prison cells. A few years later a female state prison was constructed nearby.

The hammer-dressed grey stones that were used for their construction, along with the turrets at their corners and the beautiful gardens that covered the area up to Aleksandras {Αλεξάνδρας} avenue, made both complexes look quite impressive.

There now stands the edifice that houses Areopagus {Arios Pagos ~ Άρειος Πάγος}, that is the Greek Supreme Court.
