With It Or On It

Back to where you came from. The same text in Greek.

Spartan Mothers were very proud of their origin and were celebrated for their pithy sayings, such as the proverbial "Ή τάν ή επί τάς" {I tan i epi tas}, that is "With it or on it", meaning that their soldier son should bring his shield back home when he returned from campaign or be brought on it dead; since leaving it behind and running away was equivalent to the worst kind of humiliation.
